November Camp Information

Parents & Scouts

The next camp out is planned for the weekend of November l4-16. This will be at a "Ropes" course located in Denton. This is a new activity for the troop, and is one that the PLC and other scouts have specifically asked for. Although new to the Troop, a Ropes Course is a combination Of obstacle course, Rappelling, Puzzle solving and team building The course is open to all Scouts beyond the first year First year scouts will be following their normal program activities and their cost will be correspondingly lower The theme of the camp out is "to Develop Team Work and a positive mental attitude to win Camporee"

The estimated cost for the Ropes participants is $50-55, which includes course fees, food and transportation. This is higher than usual and is driven largely by the cost of the ropes course leader and his staff. You will be getting a call in the next week or so from the Shark Patrol members asking you if you will be going on the camp out.

Those Scouts who attended the last Troop Meeting received some Permission forms and information sheets which need to be read and returned to this coming Monday Night Troop Meeting. The troop needs a fairly accurate head count, because that determines how much we pay -- below 31 participants increases the cost per person. Adults can participate in this as well. If you have questions, please call Paul Haydel at 699-3559.

OCTOBER PLC MEETING

October 20,1997

October Campout evaluation - There was a problem with scouts coming late and not in uniform to the flag ceremony. There was also a problem with the buddy system. Anytime a scout leaves the campsite, they need to be with a buddy. There was an orienteering course set up, but most scouts were not able to Navigate it. There were no new skits at the campfire. Each patrol should try to come up with new skits for each campout. Scouts did like the campsites better this year than last year.

Court of Honor evaluation - The emcees did a good job. RBF Church was unhappy with the clean-up job. The lights in the sanctuary were left on and miscellaneous items were found lying around. The lines for refreshments were very long. It was recommended to have two lines for the next court of honor.

November Campout - Dates November l4-16. The shark patrol will be in charge of organizing the campout and Mr. Kelly will try to find someone to defray the costs We can't finalize the plans until Mr. Benoit gets back on October25 to survey the campsite. We plan to have a ropes course at this campout. We have made a motto for this campout --Teamwork and positive mental attitude to win camporee.

Winter Camp - Winter camp is a good opportunity to earn many merit badges and many other fun activities. It is from December 27 to December 31. We need adult volunteers. George Kerr will present details at the October27 troop meeting, and sign up will be November 3.

Fall Festival - RBF wants both adults and scouts to help at the fall festival. Dress will be Class C. Time is from 5:30 to 8:30. You will not have to work the whole time. It will most likely be split up into two shifts.

Family Campout- Will beheld in January. We will be staying in the same cabins that we stayed in last year. The point of the campout is to practice for camporee and to teach the parents scout skills and what Troop 81 is about.

Fund Raising Results

During the month of October, you may have been approached to buy something. Whether it be Christmas item, Boy Scout Popcorn , Cookie Dough or the more unusual products Holiday Pies.

Troop 81 just completed a two week promotion selling Holiday Pies. The troop sold 130 pies with the top salesman in the troop being Jerrod Horton. Jerrod sold 30 pies and as a result of his efforts he wins the opportunity to draw for a $100.00 and participate in the Pie in the Face Prize. When asked about his success, Jerrod replied, "I had some very good Parental support."

A reminder to the other pie sellers, the pies will be available for pick up on the 17th and money collected needs to be turned in on 11/24.

Popcorn Orders should have been turned in to Mrs. Thompson at the last Meeting. Popcorn will be ready for pick upon 11/17.

All the Scouts fund-raising activities are on an individual basis instead of Troop Wide. All Funds raised will be credited to the scouts account and may be used for upcoming camps, dues or high Adventure Activities.

Boys, good Job!!!

Need your help...

When the Camping trip is over and the scouts are returned safely to Blockbuster, there have been cases where some of the boys do not have anyone there to meet them. This is unsettling to the Scout, "Where is my ride?" and not fair to the adults who went on the campout. The adults want to get home to their families.

We are trying to teach the boys responsibility, this also begins at home and one of the best ways to show responsibility is to be at Blockbusters at 12:00 Noon to pick up your scout. If you can't be there, be sure to make arrangements to have your scout picked up.

Show the Troop you care - - Be on time, all the time!

Plans 4 Winter Campout Being Made Now

Mr. George Kerr will head up this years Winter Camp. At the last troop meeting Information was distributed to interested scouts for their consideration. There were quite a few hands raised, so check with your son about his interest in the camp.

This years camp will be held December 27 through Dec. 31. This Saturday, Nov. 8, Mr. Kerr has requested that each Patrol's Quartermaster show up at Richland Bible Fellowship Church at 11:00am for a meeting to discuss supplies for Winter Camp. If you are a Patrol Quartermaster or know someone who is, make sure they attend this important meeting.

At future Troop meetings there will be additional announcements be sure to watch for them if you want to be a part of Winter Camp 1997. Questions can be directed to George Kerr.

PARENTS NEEDED

The Scout Year is 1/2 over but there is still time to get involved with Troop 81. The Winter and Spring Activities need planning now and with your involvement these activities can be some of the best times your scouts will recall.

We have several Patrol positions and troop positions open with time commitments ranging from weekly to just once during the year. Moms & Dads are both needed.

Get Involved! Please Contact:

Santa's Village Opportunities

If your Scout is looking for Service Time opportunities or might enjoy spending some time helping others in the community, Santa's village needs members of Troop 81 to help with several activities during the event. The City of Richardson builds on Santa's Village every year on the lawn by the Civic Center Fountain. It is great fun for the entire family.

Dan Lassiter brought this topic up at the last Troop Meeting and is asking for members of troop 81 to get involved. Annual Painting and fixing up of the Village will be done on Nov.14. If you are interested in helping and need more information contact Mr. Lassiter.

Gift Ideas for the Holidays

This time of year is a good time to help your scout with gear which they need for scouting but aren't everyday types of purchases.

To supplement the big things, may we suggest Troop 81 T-Shirts and/or Troop 81 Hats.

The cost is minimal when you consider what a Pro Team shirt costs and your scout can wear it everywhere, yes Daniel, even in San Francisco. Mr. Richard Carter probably still has some left but don't wait to long, because good ideas don't last long.

Telephone Calling Chain

Everytime there is a Scouting Event, the Senior Patrol Leader is supposed to make a call to each of the Patrol Leaders

The Patrol Leaders are supposed to call each member on his Patrol.

That way the message from the Top reaches everyone in the Troop.

If there is an event scheduled and your scout hasn't received a call from his Patrol Leader, then he should take the initiative to call the Senior Patrol Leader.

It is a fact that Brent would probably prefer to make 9 quick calls then to receive 69 long calls. This is a telephone calling chain. Help to complete the links.
