Winter Camp Heads December Activities

Join the Troop at Winter Camp

Winter camp is a 4 day/4 night experience held at Clements Scout Ranch near Athens, Texas. The Troop 81 boys that have gone in the past have had a great time. This camp is a combination of merit badge classes, fun and fellowship. It is shorter and less formal than summer camp with less participation due to the time of year. All activities and classes will be conducted outdoors.

There are merit badge classes as well as Trail to First Class (for new scouts) and advanced programs (for older boys) offered. All of the our boys will be taking merit badge classes. It is not expected that many merit badges will be completed since this is a short week; the boys will earn partials.

The biggest risk of this camp is bad weather -- both cold and rain. Please take this reality seriously and help the boys "be prepared" for the worst. Please make sure your son carefully reviews and understands the clothing requirements. Use the layer approach in planning what to bring. Several layers are better than one heavy coat.

We will do all of our own cooking. Troop 81 has a 16' x 32' tent in which all of the cooking and socializing will be done. Cooking will be done by or directed by the adults.

The boys should bring a ground cloth for their sleeping bag in case of rain and a good air mat or pad to keep the sleeping bag off the ground. If they don't have a cold weather sleeping bag, a second bag stuffed into the first bag or an extra blanket will work.

The total cost of this camp is $110.00 which includes the camp fee, food, and transportation. There is no cost for the leaders. There will be an orientation meeting on Dec. 8th at 6:00 pm at RBF. This meeting is mandatory for all attendees and their parents.

Outdoor toilets will be available. The availability of showers is unknown.

The Trading Post should be open. Merit badge books are usually sold at $2.50 each. However we recommend books be bought prior to camp.

Departure Saturday, 12/27/97. Gather at 7:30 am at RBF. We will be returning on Wednesday, 12/31/97 at 12:00 noon. Travel to/from camp is Class A uniform.

Drivers will be reimbursed $0.25 per mile for each direction scouts are transported (minimum of 3 scouts; prorated if less). We will need a total of 4 adults to set up the tent, so if you transport scouts to camp, plan on spending a maximum of 3 hours at camp.

Fall Flower Bulb Fund Raiser

This is the first time Troop 81 raised money by selling Flower Bulbs. Fifteen Scouts signed up to sell bulbs and eight Scouts actually sold Bulbs. This was not surprising since Popcorn and Pies were also being sold. Those eight Scouts raised $690.00 by selling 138 packages of Bulbs. By collecting the money up front, the Scouts received an extra 2% totalling $351.90. All of th emoney went directly into the Scouts' accounts. The Kerrs were the top salesmen earning $114.75 for their Scout account. We will do this again in the Spring with Summer Garden Plants.

Thanks for your participation in making the bulb sale a big success. Remember that the bulbs are guaranteed to grow and bloom? Well, if any of your customers ask how to get replacements, tell them call Dutch Mill Bulbs, Inc. at 800-533-8824.

PLC Minutes -- 11-17-97

Campout Review

The people who attended the campout had a lot of fun but not enough people attended to pay off the $1,100 trainer bill. Currently we are $350 in debt because of this and the PLC is looking for ways to pay this off. Another problem was that many of the older scouts did not know how to do basic scout skills, such as tying a bowline. These skills will be reviewed at future campouts.

Winter Camp

Mr. Kerr needs to know the count of people that will be attending winter camp so expect a call from your patrol leaders.

Family Camp

Family camp is a time for our troop to get ready for Camporee. This year the theme for Camporee is Emergency Preparedness. This means that we will have to review many aspects of first aid, how to act during natural disasters, how to prevent accidents, and how to find injured people. Many of the older scouts will set up activities that will improve the skills. The PLC will meet again on December 1st and 8th

February Campout

The PLC has decided to go on a basic campout in February. This is the campout where we plan to review many scout skills. We plan to go somewhere such as Camp Grayson or Cooper Lake.
