Scoutmaster's Minute
On my Honor, I will do my best, to do my duty, to God...
There is good reason that God is mentioned first in the
Scout Oath. God should come first in your life. We learn from our religious
leaders and our farnily how we can serve God. Your duty is following the
wisdom of the teachings you have learned about God.
In a book I've read recently, "Wisdomkeepers, Meetings
with Native American Spiritual Elders", Mathew King, or Noble Red Man,
chief of the Lakota puts it this way: "... to receive God's gift, you've
got to be pure in your heart, mind, body. and soul. And never forget that
after the prayers you've got to live that life, a life with God. That's
the hardest Part."

TROOP 81 SENDS 73 TO CAMPOREE!
1998 Boy Scout Camporee
A successful Camporee: great weather, good food, fresh
air, and lots of fun! Although I will have to admit I was disappointed
they did not announce a Camporee Winner. We should all be proud of how
hard each Scout worked to prepare for the Camporee Competition. All of
those skills we learned preparing for Camporee will be useful the rest
of our lives.
73 people went to Camporee with Troop 8l including 35
Scouts, 15 Troop Adults, 11 Webelos, and 12 Webelo Adults. Thanks to all
the adults and Junior Leaders that contributed to a successful camp out.
And Thanks to the Blackhawk Patrol for the carnp out preparation.
Troop 81 had four Order of the Arrow members serve on
the Camporee staff who ran the event: Jirah Cox, Chris Kelly, Tucker Livingston,
and Travis Thompson. Everyone is going to remember Tucker's First, Second
and Third degree burns made up for the competition because they looked
so real. If anyone got a picture of them please contribute a copy to the
Troop Bulletin Board.
Troop 81 also had 4 members "tapped out" by the Order
of the Arrow: Aaron Whitaker, Jerrod Horton, Scott Kelly, and Nathan Smith.
Pat Kelly was presented an Order of the Arrow sash in Honor of Craig who
also had been chosen to be tapped Out. Congratulations to these fine Scouts!

Junior Leader Training
On Saturday, March 21st, Jeff Branch, Richard Carter and
Dan Lassiter held a Junior Leader Training Course for 11 of our Scouts.
The Course teaches the Scout Leadership Skills through participation, role
playing, and the BSA Junior Leader Training Video Tape. The course explores
different kinds of leadership qualities of a "good" leader. Brainstorrning,
cooperation, leadership roles, problem solving, conflict resolution, and
team building. Each of these points is demonstrated and then acted out
by the scouts so that they can learn by doing. The Scouts learn how to
get others to work together, how to use teamwork and respect for others
to get the job done. They are challenged and have fun at the same time.
The course covers what a manager does: Plan, Organize,
Lead, and Control and what a leader does: Share the Vision, and Get the
Buy-in. The Course teaches the scout practical leadership and management
skills that he can use throughout his life. Each Scout that completes the
course receives the "Trained" patch to wear on the left sleeve of his uniform.
These patches will be awarded at the May Court of Honor.
Congratulations to the following scouts who completed
Junior Leader Training. Travis Carter, Brenden Kerr, Chase Russell, Jon
Frederick, Andrew Pierce, Ben Scott, Andrew Hartgraves, Daniel Pippenger,
Scott Steger, Jay Rerrin and Doug Reilly.
